Stimulation of Fusobacterium nucleatum biofilm formation by Porphyromonas gingivalis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS Bacterial infection is a major cause of periapical periodontitis. Eradication of these microorganisms from apical lesions is essential to the success of endodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to clarify the molecular interaction between Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis and other microorganisms associated with periapical periodontitis. METHODS Microorg...

Involvement of respiratory chain in biofilm formation in porphyromonas gingivalis.

Introduction Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis) is a gram-negative strict-anaerobe bacterium and constitutes one of the main pathogen responsible for periodontal diseases (2). Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory infections induced by bacteria organised in biofilm. More than 500 bacteria species take part in this biofilm including P. gingivalis (3). Although strict-anaerobe, P. gi...

Tobacco Smoke Augments Porphyromonas gingivalis - Streptococcus gordonii Biofilm Formation

Smoking is responsible for the majority of periodontitis cases in the US and smokers are more susceptible than non-smokers to infection by the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis. P. gingivalis colonization of the oral cavity is dependent upon its interaction with other plaque bacteria, including Streptococcus gordonii. Microarray analysis suggested that exposure of P. gingivalis to c...

Polyspecies biofilm formation on implant surfaces with different surface characteristics

OBJECTIVE To investigate the microbial adherence and colonization of a polyspecies biofilm on 7 differently processed titanium surfaces. MATERIAL AND METHODS Six-species biofilms were formed anaerobically on 5-mm-diameter sterilized, saliva-preconditioned titanium discs. Material surfaces used were either machined, stained, acid-etched or sandblasted/acid-etched (SLA). Samples of the latter t...
